Science Engagement Policy Research Assistant
Association of Science and Technology Centers
Remote
Salary Range: $30-$50 per hour, part-time contractor 15-20 hours, 2-month term
The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) is hiring part-time Research Assistants to support a landscape assessment of the ways that the United States federal government supports activities that engage the public with science and technology. This is a remote position. Applicants must reside in the U.S. Research Assistants will be paid $30-50/hr for up to 20 hours per week. The position can begin as early as June 12, with an expected duration of 2 months.
The Project
With support from the Rita Allen Foundation, ASTC is seeking to research and publish a landscape of United States federal government support for the broad range of activities that are engaging the public with science and technology (referred to here simply as “science engagement”). These resources are rarely, if ever, classified as “science engagement” within agency budgets and programs, so this project will document diverse government-run programs and activities under this large umbrella and establish a framework that characterizes initiatives that support engagement between science and members of the public.
The Role
Research Assistants will contribute to data collection and synthesis. They will do this by reviewing webpages, reports, and other materials and documenting programs and features that meet the project scope and criteria. As appropriate, they may be asked to participate in or lead discussions with external experts as part of the data collection process. Research Assistants will have regular opportunities to meet virtually with each other and with the ASTC project leads.
Ideal candidates:
• Have familiarity with at least one facet of science engagement (e.g., citizen science, science communication, community science, informal science education)
• Are comfortable reading materials written for diverse audiences, extracting key information, and synthesizing insights from different types of sources
• Are comfortable working independently in coordination with a team
• Are proficient in English
• Candidates do not need to have a science background or familiarity with federal policy or programming.
About ASTC
The Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) is a professional membership organization with a vision of increased understanding of—and engagement with—science and technology among all people and a mission to champion and support science and technology centers and museums. Founded in 1973, ASTC champions and supports more than 500 science centers, technology museums, natural history museums, children’s museums, and other STEM-rich, place-based institutions, such as nature centers, aquariums, planetariums, zoos, and botanical gardens throughout North America and in nearly 50 countries—as well as nearly 200 other organizations that share an interest in science learning and engagement. ASTC is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit educational organization.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter – adding why you’re applying for the role and why you’d be a great fit – and resume to jobs@astc.org. We will accept applications until the positions are filled.

David and Jane Cohn Scientist
Science Museum of Virginia
Richmond, Virginia
Salary Range: $85,000 — $100,000
We’re looking for a unicorn. Well, maybe a four-leaf clover because they actually exist but are still hard to find. The Science Museum of Virginia is looking for a person who is equal parts scientist and spokesperson. Someone who is as passionate about accuracy as they are the experience. If that’s you, read on.
The Science Museum’s brand is quirky and unexpected. We don’t teach science. We surprise our community with science in unexpected and fun ways. Think SNL skit mixed with factual information. The David and Jane Cohen Scientist is the lead scientist at the Science Museum and is part of the team responsible for ensuring that scientific content is correctly communicated in a way that engages and inspires. The right scientist for this job will be an accomplished interpreter, strong team player, creative thinker and voracious investigator. You should also be comfortable in front of the camera. That’s because the Science Museum is the marketing agency for science, so our lead scientist needs to be ready for their close-up at any time. STEM is interconnected, so we aren’t looking for a scientist in a specific field of STEM. We need the personality and approach and can lean into expertise from there.
So, if you’re a natural problem solver who loves to dream up new ideas and see those ideas come to life, then go to jobs.virginia.gov and consider joining one of the quirkiest teams in town!
