About the IF/THEN® Initiative

In 2019, ASTC joined with the IF/THEN® Initiative, a nationwide effort to advance women innovators in STEM fields and inspire the next generation of girls. Launched by Lyda Hill Philanthropies, IF/THEN® is built on the mantra that “if we support a woman in STEM, then she can change the world.” Working with partners across industries, IF/THEN has created a diverse Coalition that is activating a culture shift by undertaking projects to increase the representation of women and gender minorities in STEM fields.

The Initiative is also highlighting women in STEM fields through the AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors Program, a cohort of 125 talented women STEM professionals who serve as role models for the next generation of girls. Three members of the ASTC community have been named as AAAS IF/THEN® Ambassadors: Olivia Castellini, senior exhibit developer at the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago, Illinois); and Becca Peixotto, director of the Center for the Exploration of the Human Journey, and Myria Perez, fossil preparator, both at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science (Dallas, Texas).

About ASTC’s IF/THEN® Gender Equity Project

As a member of the IF/THEN® Coalition, ASTC has created a gender representation toolkit, launched a grant program, and, in partnership with the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), is managing a digital library with photos and videos of women in STEM fields.

  • The IF/THEN® Gender Representation Toolkit is designed to help museums collect data on the visual representation of gender in museum content like exhibits, websites, virtual programming, and more. This data can be used to help drive change toward more equitable gender representation. Data that museums submit to ASTC will contribute to a state-of-the-field report.
  • ASTC is awarding $600,000 in IF/THEN® Gender Equity Grants to ASTC-member museums in the U.S. to support projects that highlight women and gender minorities in STEM. Read about some of the grant projects on the ASTC blog.
  • The IF/THEN® Collection, created in partnership with NGCP, is a digital library housing photos, videos, and other media of women in STEM fields. These media are available at no cost for ASTC-member museums to use across all museum content, including exhibits, virtual programming, websites, and program materials.
  • Explore the resources page for information about gender equity and inclusion in the museum field.

“Museums play such a critical role in attracting and educating kids that we have to make sure they’re telling the stories and holding up role models of all people who’ve been involved in the STEM fields…”

– Ellen Stofan, Director of Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, May/June 2018 issue of ASTC’s Dimensions magazine
